Descripción
In a continued effort to combat child malnutrition, World Vision International Rwanda, in partnership with AEE Rwanda and Ngororero District, has intensified its commitment through the implementation of the Positive Deviance Hearth (PDH) model. This community-based approach focuses on sustainable rehabilitation of malnourished children by promoting the use of locally available resources and strengthening community health systems.
As part of the initiative, 39,401 children were screened, and 12,107 children aged 6 months to 5 years were identified as malnourished. These children are now set to undergo a structured 12-day rehabilitation program aimed at achieving healthy weight gain through improved nutrition and feeding practices.
To support this effort, 17 nutritionists and 15 Community Environmental Health Officers (CEHOs) received a one-day refresher training focused on meal planning using local food types, portion calculation, and practical cooking demonstrations during Hearth sessions. The training also emphasized the importance of monitoring child progress throughout the 12-day period to ensure effective rehabilitation.
These trained professionals will further cascade their knowledge to Community Health Workers (CHWs) throughout Ngororero District. By mentoring and supporting CHWs, they will enhance the reach and consistency of the PDH model at the grassroots level. Additionally, they will oversee the monitoring and follow-up of households, helping to reinforce healthy practices and ensure the long-term sustainability of recovery efforts.
World Vision International Rwanda and Ngororero District have expressed their appreciation for the dedication of the trained teams and reaffirmed their ongoing support to scale up the initiative and reduce malnutrition across the district.
