In Northern Rwanda, Gakenke district, (main place of Kivuruga sector), Caritas Byumba and World Vision Rwanda are using a powerful, community-based model to fight child malnutrition: the Positive Deviance Hearth where they Hearth session Approach. In small group sessions held in local homes, mothers and caregivers come together to learn how to cook nutritious meals using affordable, local foods. They also receive training on hygiene, feeding practices, and early detection of malnutrition. “It’s not just learning,” says one caregiver. “We practice what we are taught, right there in the hearth.” These sessions are practical, supportive, and led by local volunteers—making them both accessible and sustainable. Thanks to this model, more children are growing healthy, and families are becoming active leaders in their own nutrition journey. From homes to health—the Hearth Approach is changing lives, one child at a time.
<thumbnail_url>https://nutritiondialogues.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/GtKtaiaXgAAq4eH-1024x768.jpg</thumbnail_url></oembed>
